Until I broke down in JoAnn last night over fabric samples. Or rather, a lack of fabric samples. B and I headed there after I got off work, in hopes of pulling a few sample squares to bring to his Mawmaw - who has generously offered to make the crib skirt and window cornices for our nursery. I knew exactly what I had had in mind.
And we left with exactly zero samples. Total nursery fail.
Hence the preggo-girl breakdown in the store last night. Which ended with my poor, dear hubby ushering me to our car while attempting to figure out how to solve the problem with the limited resources at his disposal. It was almost funny to seem him try to console me. When all I wanted what exactly what he couldn't give me. Some darn fabric samples. Is that so much to ask? Apparently, at JoAnn, it is. I mean, have y'all seen some of the hideous fabrics that they have there? I'm sure they're a great place to go to for fabric for pillows, draperies, tablecloths, etc. In fact, I will be heading back there to pick up some burlap and linen for some future DIY's. But they are not good for nurseries. At all. Blah.
Part of the problem here is that I am not a good decision maker. When it comes to big things, I do alright. I get it done. But all the tiny things that make up a nursery? On top of my propensity to strive for a level of perfection that is near impossible? A recipe for disaster. I literally spent several hours yesterday with the baby's monogrammed quilt just sitting in my online basket before finally pushing the 'confirm order' button. Yes, hours. Worried that I would change my mind and then be stuck with this monogrammed, paid for quilt. Sigh.
There are just so many options to be considered when it comes to baby nurseries. And being on a tight budget makes each of these decisions more important - after all, I can't just purchase things willy-nilly. Each item has to be well thought-out. And planned for. Fortunately for me, there seem to be less color scheme variations appropriate for boys than for girls; so that narrows my options down a bit. Unfortunately for me, I hate most of the color schemes that you see when you type 'boy nursery' into a search bar.
And therein lies the conundrum.

In looking at it now (after pulling the trigger on the Pottery Barn quilt yesterday for less than 1/3 of the price), it's probably a good thing we can't afford that bedding. I can just see my husband saying, "That bedding is way too girly for a boy."
Granted, the above comment would be coming from a man that thought the Babies 'R Us crib bedding with the lion riding on the train was cute. Blurgh. Needless to say, his stylistic opinions are taken with a grain of salt. Or less. There will be no animals riding trains, airplanes, boats, cars, alphabet letters, sporting items - i.e. balls of any shape, color or size - or primary colors adorning anything in my son's room. To each their own, but that's just not my style. I am loving the simple, clean-lined approach that has become more common in modern nurseries. With a color scheme, but no theme. Again, no dancing elephants, thank you very much.
You can bet when I do get this all figured out (which will be sooner rather than later, knowing my Type A, stress-about-it-til-the-problem's-solved personality), you guys will be the first to know. And first to see the resulting photos.
For now, I am being as creative as possible with the resources that I do have. And hoping that the hubby's making doctor pay by the time we have our next child. You know, so I can purchase the beautiful crib set above. Be it for a boy or girl.
Here's to hoping for no more breakdowns in the fabric stores.
Week 21 'bump'date to come!

Hang in there! I too cannot stand the primary color theme, it seems so jarring! You will find something great.
If you're looking for cute and contemporary fabric, JoAnn's (or any chain store) really isn't the place to go. I had a couch reupholstered last year and had the worst time ever finding good upholstery fabric.
Try onlinefabricstore.net, fabricwarehousedirect.com, or search for locally-owned fabric stores. I have also had good luck on Etsy finding contemporary and cute fabrics for a variety of home sewing and crafting projects.
Good luck friend!! Like the person above said, I'd check online for cute and modern fabrics!
Fabric stores really stress me out. Pottery barn sells fabric by the yard and will send you samples. I think some of the other online stores mentioned above do as well. Do you read centsational girl blog? She has some great resources for fabric-- I always like what she does. John Hancock is another good resource for fabric. Good luck!
it's going to be okay!
I got my fabric (simple navy chevron) from fabric.com and my mother in law made a crib skirt for me. To go with it I got a plain white sheet. THAT is my bedding! Very simple (plus, I was told NO bumper pads at my birthing class this week!)
I love Miller's bedding and it was so cheap! Like ridiculously cheap! Just a suggestion, if you like the simple look! I'm adding his name above the crib in white letters and a fabric bunting banner for more color!
Email me if you ever want to chat about baby boy things:) valeriekgriffin@gmail.com
I think Premier Prints has adorable baby fabrics. Lots to choose from. They have several stores in Mississippi and sell at several others. You may have some near you, or you can order online--The best part is they are cheap!!
Love you! Hang in there... you will find something you love.
I've felt that overwhelmed feeling too. With Pinterest, I feel like I'm always stumbling on another great idea...that doesn't match what I've just bought for my little one's nursery. Wishing you all the best!
Just found your cute blog--loved this post...I feel like I know you just from reading it! Babies are not in my near future, but I am with ya--no lions riding in trains for me, hehe!
I couldn't imagine spending too much on nursery bedding, either! I think PBK's has reasonable bedding and super cute, too. You can always find fabric you like for a crib skirt or a blanket/quilt/pillow for rocker/glider in the design/colors you want to incorporate in the nursery but not pay crazy $ for!
I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose to go with and see it all come together! I know it will look awesome! :)
